Thunder 5 Ranch
HOGS

Long past time to update this page. Our breeding program is exactly
where I want it in terms of high quality barrel hogs one to the left is a prime
example of what a finished T5R hog will look like with some variation in
color. 1/2 Berkshire, 1/4 old spot and 1/4 Hereford. I finish these hogs at
320-340 pounds the meat is of the best flavor and quality or so I believe and
have been told by atleast 100 of our customers now. The Bacons are thick,
the hams are bulging, the shoulders are thick and tender and the pork
chops and tenderloins are second to none! These hogs have enough fat
to make great 70/30 or 80/20 sausage or pork burgers. They have very
meaty spare ribs and the best butt roast I have ever had. Plus huge jowls
that offer my favorite part of the hog...... Brined and smoked Jowl its better
than any bacon :)
Our feeder/finishing hogs are raised on pasture and in woodlots where
they get 2/3s of their diet from forage and there is always a feeder available
with non GMO corn and supplement that they get the remaining 1/3 of their
diet from.
If all goes well and as expected the Thunder 5 Ranch will be producing
180-200 finished hogs in 2013 both for our retail sales at the farmers
markets we attend and as whole hog sales to our IL. MO. IN. and KY. whole
hog customers for custom exempt processing. Whole hogs are available
by reserve only currently there is a 6-8 month wait for a finished whole hog,
sorry but our hogs really are that good and I can provide impartial
references to back that claim up :) These truly are natural raised hogs.

The First arrivals of the Herefords. They are
only 6 weeks old here.
We do buy local feeders on occasion at 6-7
weeks of age give them a Iron Shot and put
them on dirt. This is one of the Yorkshire
feeders at 24 weeks old coming to a skidding
stop or is she pooping? Skidding halt when
the camera flashed :)
